Hex Nuts Explained: Sizes, Pairing and Common Uses
Learn what hex nuts are, how sizing and thread pitch work, where they are used, and how to pair them correctly with hex bolts.

Hex nuts are six-sided internally threaded fasteners used with compatible bolts or threaded rods. Their shape lets a wrench or socket grip the sides for assembly and removal. This guide explains how hex nuts work, how to check size and threads, and where they are commonly used. For a wider overview of other designs, see our guide to nuts used in construction.

What is a hex nut?
A hex nut has six external flats and a threaded hole through its centre. When installed on a matching bolt, tightening the assembly creates clamp force that holds the joined parts together. Its hexagonal shape allows ordinary spanners and sockets to grip it. Actual joint strength depends on the bolt, nut, material, engagement and installation requirements—not the six-sided shape alone.
Common uses of hex nuts
Hex nuts appear in general machinery, equipment frames, fabricated steel assemblies, maintenance and repair work. Their removable design can make inspection and replacement convenient. The required nut grade and assembly details are determined by the application.
Construction and metal fabrication
Selected hex nuts may be used with specified bolts in frames, brackets and other fabricated connections. Structural connections must follow the project engineer’s design and applicable standards. Read more about nuts used in construction.
Machinery and workshops
Workshops use hex nut and bolt assemblies for covers, fixtures, supports and other equipment components where a removable joint is appropriate. Vibration, temperature and maintenance access may require a different nut style or locking arrangement.
Hex nut sizes: what to check
There is no single size that fits every job. Before ordering, check the nominal thread diameter, pitch, thread system and the required nut dimensions against your drawing or existing approved fastener. Do not assume a hex nut fits merely because its opening looks similar to a bolt.
Diameter and thread pitch
For metric threads, a designation such as M10 identifies a nominal diameter; the specified pitch still matters. Coarse and fine pitches of the same nominal diameter must not be mixed. Inch-series threaded fasteners have their own thread designations.
Across-flats dimension and nut height
Across-flats width determines wrench or socket fit. Nut height and thread engagement depend on the specified nut pattern and application. Consult the applicable drawing or product specification when dimensions are critical.
How to pair a hex nut with a hex bolt
Start by matching nominal thread size, pitch and thread form. Next check that the nut’s mechanical property requirements match the bolt and designed load. Confirm the finish and environmental suitability, and use the tightening procedure specified for the joint. Do not force the threads if the nut does not turn smoothly during initial engagement.

Hex nut versus flange nut

A standard hex nut uses its bearing face or an appropriately selected washer against the joined part. A flange nut includes a wider integral bearing face. The right option depends on the surface, the joint design and whether a washer or other component is specified. A flange is not automatically a replacement for a properly engineered washer arrangement.
Hex nut versus locking nut
Standard hex nuts do not have the same built-in prevailing-torque feature as a nylon lock nut. When vibration or movement is a concern, the engineer may specify a locking nut or another suitable locking arrangement. Never substitute fastening systems solely by appearance.

Frequently asked questions
Do all hex nuts fit all hex bolts?
No. Their threads and mechanical specifications must be compatible. Matching the number of sides does not establish compatibility.
Are hex nuts suitable for outdoor use?
Suitability depends on material, finish, exposure and the complete joint. Confirm a specified corrosion-protection system rather than assuming every hex nut is outdoor-rated.
Can I reuse a hex nut?
Reuse depends on the application, nut condition and relevant installation requirements. Replace any fastener with damaged threads or where the specified procedure requires a new one.
